No. I have neither had a brain anyurism or joined the Dark Side.
I spent about an hour today, sitting on the Random Deviant button, and saw a lot of manga. Some of which was good, some of which was...um, not so good? Anyway, I wondered just how difficult the style is once you've had a certain amount of realistic study, and decided to exparament.
It's a manga-tized version of Muchas Printemps (translated in my book as "Spring"). It was a simple pose to copy, and the actual drawing process was rather fun. If...short. My other reasoning for doing a cartoony picture is that I'm planning on offering comissions, eventually, and I wanted to see how long the other "stages" would take. Started it this afternoon at four, finished it at about nine...so not that long. Five hours.
Again, I eyeballed Mucha's Printemps. You can google it if you want to see the original. I probably won't ever do another Manga pic, so enjoy it while it lasts...or thank God for it, either way...
That's really amazing for something made in such a short amount of time. O.o It would have taken me days to get that good of quality at this point in time. Your anime style is awesome, too!

Thanks. I did a webcomic for a while (and need to get back to it) So that experiance helped...a lot.

Well...that most of the books most newbies learn from suck; those nice, shiny titles with the flashy covers and the pretty illustraitons don't explain the things you need to know to make it work. It's still basically simplified realism, more difficult than it looks because it's simplified--you have to know which details you can drop and which ones you have to keep, what proportions you can exaggerate and when you've gone too far... I think the biggest thing I noticed was that it's probably easier to get consistant characters through manga than American comic styles, which might be one reason why it was developed. I've never minded manga style...and like well-done pictures quite a bit. It's just never really been my thing.

ahahah you just expressed my thoughts on tutorial books in general right there. They almost never give you advice that you can take and apply on a broad level, usually it's just how to mimic *one* particular character/design/etc. And then people wonder why everything they draw looks the same *coughs*
And that's an amazing point. I think you've hit the nail on the head about consistent characters. One thing that always drove me crazy was that you can TELL when a company switches artists, because their way of drawing them is unique to each artist... so often it's hard to tell who's who until you read the comic. But with the manga it's always pretty consistent. You know the title, you know the basic hair style of each char, it's pretty easy to match each one up.
